19th September 2017: Cumberland net prestigious England Netball award as outstanding Club of the Year (Islington Gazette)
Cumberland Netball Club has been celebrating after winning England Netball’s outstanding club of the year award.
The national award, received at a ceremony at Birmingham’s National Conference Centre on Saturday, recognises Cumberland’s string of recent achievements.
The club this year became one of only 30 clubs nationwide to hold England Netball’s Gold CAPS accreditation, which recognises clubs offering the highest levels of netball provision within their community.
And chair Jo Stevens was also one of only eight coaches in the country to pass her UKCC Level 3 award this year.
“It is an incredible honour to have received this award on behalf of the many outstanding volunteers who have gone before me, including those who first founded Cumberland 16 years ago,” said Stevens. “Cumberland is an amazing club run by a strong and dedicated team of young women. We are proud to offer netball in central London to all skill sets, from beginners to National Premier League, and for all ages.”
Cumberland’s head of coaching Kim North added: “It is an honour to receive this award in recognition of the hard work and talent of Cumberland’s coaches. Recognition must go to all the volunteers including our fellow nominee Elz Eve, who together help us create a professional and enjoyable coaching environment and develop talented netballers of all ages and levels. I am proud to be part of a club of so many brilliant women and to receive this prestigious award.”
Cumberland has 11 senior and five junior teams and is one of only six clubs within the M25 to compete in the Mizuno National Premier League.
The awards are part of England Netball’s annual Goalden Globes, which celebrates the outstanding contributions of volunteers around the country.
Cumberland’s Elzaan Eve received the London and South East Region’s Grassroots Official award for her commitment to umpiring, having recently qualified as a B award umpire and taken on the Head of Umpiring role at Cumberland.
Cumberland are now preparing for their opening National Premier League match of the season at London’s City University on September 24.

7th July 2017: Awards joy for Islington's Cumberland Netball Club (Islington Gazette)
Islington’s Cumberland Netball Club has won England Netball’s outstanding club of the year award for London and the South East.
It was presented at the weekend after the club became Middlesex’s first to get the Gold CAPS mark, given to those offering excellent netball in their community.
Elzaan Eve received a grassroots official award for her commitment to umpiring, having recently qualified as a B award umpire and taken on the head of umpiring role.
“I’m so delighted to receive this award. I do everything for the love of netball and this would not have been possible without all the support from everyone at Cumberland,” she said.
Cumberland was named Middlesex County Club of the Year in June and new chair Jo Stevens, whose level three coaching was a factor for Gold CAPS, said: “I would never have got through it without my amazing mentor Dame Maggie Jackson, England Netball’s pilot mentoring scheme, plus the support of Cumberland NC.”

7th April 2017: For netball ace Kira, international glory is 'scary but cool' (Camden New Journal/Islington Tribune)
RISING netball star Kira Rothwell made an international debut she will never forget after helping to lead England to victory over their neighbouring rival nations.
The 16-year-old, who grew up in Holloway and now lives in Highgate, took charge of the goal attack as the Roses beat hosts Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales to win the Under-17s Championships last month.
It has been a meteoric rise for Kira, who is currently enjoying her first season as a senior player for Cumberland Netball Club’s premier side, and turns out regularly for her regional club, London Pulse.
“It was amazing,” beamed Kira as she reflected on her international glory.
“It was scary but cool. When I finally got the email saying I’d made the England squad it was such a relief.
“It’s nice knowing that the coaches think I’m good enough to play for England.
“In netball you don’t automatically keep your place in the team – you have to keep going to trials, so I have to keep working hard if I want to represent England again.”
Asked how the National Premier League, where she competes for Cumberland, compared to playing for her country, Kira added: “It’s so much more physical.
“Playing for England, I was up against people my own age, whereas in the national league I’m up against older, more experienced players.
“It’s made me have to play in a more intelligent way.”
Kira was the first to admit that her success on the court wasn’t only all down to how hard she trains.
Her father Paul plays a big part in her success, getting her to and from all her commitments, and she credits him with how well she’s doing.
“He’s amazing. I couldn’t do any of it without him,” Kira added.

17th March 2017: Last-gasp agony for Cumberland (Camden New Journal/Islington Tribune)
PLAYERS from Cumberland Netball Club suffered an agonising last-gasp defeat on Sunday when they were beaten by just three points in Division Three of the National Premier League.
Led by rising star Kira Rothwell, the side from NW1 looked on course to take something from their game against Norwich’s Thoroughbreds with the score tied at 47-all with just three minutes left on the clock.
A string of late penalties against Cumberland proved costly, however, as the visitors scored in the dying moments of the match, which was held at the Franklin Building in Clerkenwell, to secure a 52-49 victory.
