Juniors
A note from the Junior Coaches
A note from the Junior CoachesA very warm welcome to the junior section of the Cumberland Netball Club Website!
We have a thriving junior section here at Cumberland, which encompasses players school year 9 and below (players aged 14-18, school year 10 and above, please see the ‘Youth’ section of the website). Typically our players range from 10 years old upwards, and most have some experience of playing netball through school (although this is not a pre-requisite). We train the girls in full 7-a-side netball on full sized courts, rather than High-5 netball.
We do not have formal trials for our junior section at Cumberland, and as such everyone is welcome to come along to junior training, which takes place Wednesday evenings. If you are interested in joining our junior section please do come along to a training session, and contact one of the junior coaches to let us know that you are coming.
We hope that all of our juniors have a great season and forge new friendships both on and off the court; and most importantly, enjoy their netball!
I hope that the details below provide you with sufficient information, but please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any further queries.
Kind regards,
Chaz Southcott

Junior Training
Here at Cumberland we aim to make our junior training sessions fun and enjoyable, while at the same time improving holistic netball skills including fitness and teamwork as well as their netball game. We always end our tra8ining sessions with some match play, which the girls really enjoy.
We train every Wednesday evening 6pm – 7.30pm at Camden courts during school term time (See our contact page for address and map). Training starts at the beginning of the autumn term and follows the school calendar until the Easter holidays. We do not train during the summer term. (If you would like to be contacted when training resumes again in September, please contact the junior coaches and we will add you to the email distribution list)
Please make sure that your daughter attends training session in appropriate sports clothes and sports trainers – this is to ensure the girls get the most out of the sessions and helps avoid injuries. Additionally, it is dangerous to play with any jewellery on so please ensure that these items (and items such as mobile phones) are left in bags or at home. The girls will not be allowed to play with any jewellery or phones in pockets, therefore these items if present will be left at the side of the courts during the session at their own risk. We play on outside courts in all weathers except when there is ice on the ground, so please make sure that your daughter comes with appropriate layers / change of dry top / trousers for the journey home to ensure they keep warm. While we realise it can at times be quite cold, it is dangerous to play netball in scarves, so the girls will be asked to remove these at the start of the session, and all gloves and hats with ties must be removed after the warm up.
The first 2 sessions that your daughter attends will be free of charge, however membership fees for the season are due by the third session. Membership fees cover Affiliation and insurance with England Netball, Court hire and coaching costs. After the first two sessions, any subsequent sessions attended until the season’s subs are paid will incur a £3 training fee per session which will not be offset from the future subs payment. Once subs have been paid for the season, this covers the cost of all remaining training sessions.
For the 2011/12 season, membership fees for Juniors will be £100 for the whole season or £65 for those joining after 01/01/2012.
Junior Competition Opportunities
We enter our juniors into the North London Junior Netball League competition. The league has both U12 and U14 divisions. Whether we enter a junior team into one or both divisions typically depends on demand for any given season. Outside of this, there are typically other tournament opportunities, and we are able to contact other clubs in the area to arrange friendly matches dependent on demand.
League matches take place approximately once a fortnight on Saturdays from September to April. Please see the North London Junior Netball League Website for information about fixtures and results for the current season. League matches all take place at Broomfield Park courts (Palmers Green, London, N13 4RB).
We also love to have involvement from parents, particularly on match days! These are often great fun to be part of, and the girls really appreciate the support on the sidelines. If you would be interested in volunteering some of your time to help support Cumberland Juniors please do get in touch.
Information about the junior coaches
Head coach - Chaz Blythe – UKCC Level 2 qualified coach
Chaz has been coaching the junior section at Cumberland for the past 2 seasons, and took on the role of head coach for 2010/11. She also regularly coaches adult back-to-netballers, as well as playing for one of the senior teams at Cumberland. Chaz has been a ‘netball geek’ since starting to play aged 11 and loves nothing more than spending her Saturdays at the courts watching Cumberland reign supreme!
A History of Cumberland Juniors
Cumberland juniors was set up in 2002 by Gemma Cooke and Yvonne Beadle, following a successful application for an Awards for All Grant. At the time there were no local clubs for girls to attend and both Gemma and Yvonne felt it would allow youngsters to develop their talents further. Two teams were entered into the North London Junior Netball League at U12 and U14 level.
Many of our junior players have gone on to play at County Satellite Academies and University teams. A number of girls made the leap from the junior section to the senior section, playing to a high standard. And we also had a junior player that was selected for the National Talent League.
When the club moved to Camden we were delighted that Karen Atkinson was able to attend our first training session. The girls response was fantastic and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Karen was quoted as saying “The set-up is great - I would have loved to have had a netball club like that when I was growing up”.
We are very proud of what we started and are delighted that it continues to prosper. The junior clubs success is due to the dedication of the coaches, old and new, and the contributions of all the girls that have been members over the years. Thank you to all that have taken part.
Members Pack
Further details about the Club as a whole, and it’s policies and procedures can be found in our Members Pack, which can be downloaded here
If your daughter would like to join Cumberland this season, then please return the junior membership form with the membership fees included, in an envelope with the junior member’s name printed clearly on the front. Please ensure that the contact details and email addresses are up to date and checked regularly, as there is often information emailed or texted week–to–week that is pertinent to training and / or matches. Sometimes training or matches may need to be cancelled at short notice due to bad weather, therefore these details will be used to get in contact with you.

We have some school-club links already set up, however here at Cumberland we are always delighted to link with new schools. Please contact us if you would be interested in setting up a school-club link with your school.
