B Team Match Report, 11.10.08

On Saturday 11th October, Cumberland B took on Academy in what turned out to be an incredible close and hard fought game.

A new combination of players was tested once again but with some solid, safe play, the team did well and managed to gel relatively quickly, starting strong and winning the first quarter 12-6.

Fresh legs were brought on at centre for the second quarter, and although Cumberland did what they could to keep the pressure on, Academy began gaining ground. The opposition won the second quarter, though were unable to claw back the lead Cumberland had established in the first quarter. Cumberland was just ahead, 21-17 by half time, and well aware of the threat posed by the aggressive opposition.

Subs were brought on in defence for the beginning of the third quarter, and despite admirable attempts to dominate play, cracks were beginning to show in Cumberland’s efforts. Academy managed to win the third quarter, further eroding the lead established in the opening quarter and leaving us with an ever-narrower lead, 31-28.

During the fourth quarter it became clear that our early lead would not be enough to guarantee an easy victory, and though the team fought hard, Academy fought harder. The opposition exploited Cumberland’s weaknesses, especially the insecurities and uncertainties which arise as a result of lacking routine in playing together. Passing was unsympathetic in places to say the least, and we were unable to manage our frustrations, Academy aggressively converting our mistake into goals. The final score was an incredibly frustrating 39-44 to Academy. Hopefully with routine and experience, our next meeting will end differently…

Well done to Lindie Champion and Krista Priscott who delivered particularly strong efforts and performances and who therefore share man of the match.
